You may wonder why Vivaldi is a logical choice of music for a benefit concert supporting the children of J's House.
Well, let me tell you!
Vivaldi wrote his beloved, joyful Gloria around 1715, while working as the resident music instructor at an orphanage in Venice. Yes, abandoned children were cared for by the church even in the 18th century! This orphanage trained boys to support themselves with manual trades and trained girls to become singers and instrumentalists. This was a way for children to become self-sufficient as adults, despite their tragic beginnings.
Scholars believe the Gloria was first sung by a choir of these young girls.
The synergy of this history with the story of the boys of J's house struck me. I just had to include Gloria in the repertoire for our November concert. The second half of the concert will lead us into the present, with songs of today and rich poetic texts of hope, renewal and fulfillment, while we hear the story of how J's House came to be.
Join us, won't you? ~Meredith
